Wilkins was hot and tired, so he went into a small cafe for a cold drink.
The place was empty except for an old man and a dog.
They were both sitting at a table in a corner of the cafe.
In front of them was a chessboard.
For a moment, wilkins could not believe his eyes.
He stared and stared at the man and the dog.
They were actually playing chess.
The dog moved pieces with its nose and took them off the board with its teeth.
When he made a good move, he wagged his tail.
When he lost a piece because he had made a bad move, he growled.
When he won a game by checkmating the old man's king, the dog barked.
Wilkins watched the old man and the dog playing chess for about an hour.
During this time, the old man won a game, and the dog won a game.
Finally, Wilkins could not stop himself from going up to the old man.
"I don't want to be rude," he said, "but I just want to say i think your dog must be the smartest dog in the world. I've been watching him play chess with you for an hour. It's amazing."
"He isn't so smart," the old man said. "We've played five games today, and he's only won two."
